Valorant on PS5, Xbox: No Crossplay, Same Updates

Riot Games’ free-to-play hero shooter Valorant has officially launched on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S, following a recent open beta on consoles. To maintain what the developer describes as “Valorant’s renowned standard for competitive integrity,” crossplay between the existing PC version and the new console editions will not be enabled. Riot has, however, promised that all future content updates—including new maps and characters—will release simultaneously across platforms, ensuring parity for both PC and console players.

Today’s launch concludes a four-year journey to bring Valorant from PC to consoles. Riot previously expressed uncertainty about whether the game would translate well to console play, but the port is now complete. Eurogamer’s 2020 review praised the game’s competitive rigor, calling it “a severe, soulless and uncompromising experience” that is “exacting, infuriating, sublime.” The review highlighted Valorant’s precision and life-consuming obsession as central to its success.

      Community and Inclusivity Efforts

Valorant’s community has repeatedly drawn Riot’s attention due to toxicity. Studio leadership has taken a strong public stance: in May this year, the studio head said toxic players should “go play something else, we won’t miss you,” while CEO Anna Donlon stated, “If you want to make evil statements under the guise of shit talk, you aren’t welcome here.” On a more positive note, Riot’s Game Changers programme aims to make Valorant’s esports scene more inclusive for women, combating toxicity through structural change.
